At about 03:fifteen, the VC mortar hearth temporarily slackened since the sappers started to withdraw through the village. The Marines took advantage of the lull to send out a squad into Phu Thanh to seek out and guide CUPP 9. To reach the CUPP, the squad had to operate its way via a Section of the village already devastated because of the sappers.
